08/05/2010: The weekend of June 26th and 27th was the West Regional 6 man team event at Lake Erie. This tournament was held in the Bay. The fishing was extremely tough and the guys fished hard but finished 7th. Not quite the results they were looking for, but never the less it was a great time and they all learned a lot about the bay.
July 9th and 10th marked the Mr. Bass West tournament, held at Chautauqua Lake in Jamestown NY. This is an excellent bass fishery located about 40 miles east of Lake Erie. Three of the 5 team members arrived at the lake Tuesday morning to pre-fish for 3 days prior to the tournament. The fish were biting well, on crank baits, stick baits, and jigs. Deep weed edges, points and docks seemed to be the best spots to locate these fish. Friday morning was the first morning of the tournament, and a front was on its way in, by noon it was raining so hard you couldn’t see 10 feet in front of the boat.
Saturday was much better weather, although fishing after a front is tough as we all know. At the end of the two day tournament, anglers Brian Spencer finished 6th with a weight of 19.72, Brad Bressler finished 7th with a weight of 18.34 and Rich Wolota finished 11th with a final weight of 12.63. On the co-angler side of the team Derek Severns finished 7th with a weight of 10.59 and Jeff Spencer finished up 9th with 10.47. Both Brian and Brad were able to qualify for the PA State Championship from this tournament. The PA State Championship will be held in October, back at Chautauqua Lake.
July 11th was the first of three District 6 events that the Bass Hounds will be fishing. This event was held at Chautauqua Lake after the 2 prior days of the Mr. Bass tournament. Finding and having fish for three days is tough. This tournament would be a true test of how the week of pre fishing worked out. Following some of the same patterns but changing up some locations and trying a few new spots lead the team to some good finishes. Brad Bressler, angler for the Bass Hounds, finished 2nd with 13.25 pounds. Angler Rich Wolota had 11.38 pounds to finish 3rd. Angler Brian Spencer had 7.30 pounds to finish 9th. Co angler Derek Severns finished 2nd on the co anglers side with 9.07 pounds and the lunker of the tournament, a 5.25 smallmouth caught on a Poor Boys ¾ ounce green pumpkin jig. Jeff Spencer finished 10th on the co angler side with 2.79 pounds. So the first of three events was a great showing for the Bass Hounds with 2 second place finishes and a third. The next District 6 tournament will be on Lake Erie August 8th followed by the Allegheny River tournament at Brady’s Bend August 22nd.
08/04/2010: I got a 2nd place out of 12 boats in the Southern Lake Michigan Superbass tournament on Saturday, July 17th and I got a 4th place out of 20 boats on Sunday, July 18th in the Illiana Bass Club open on Southern Lake Michigan. A darter and drop shot goby played a role in each, and I cashed a check in each.
07/08/2010: On April 11th, 2010 I finished 3rd/18 boats using a crankbait and mango magic Poor Boy's Erie Darter, Jr. on a jighead. This tournament I weighed in 5 fish for 17.46 pounds and caught the lunker of the tournament, a 5.3 pound smallmouth.
On May 15 and 16 I fished the prestigious Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament on Lake Michigan. I caught fish a variety of ways in this two day tournament for a total of 40th place out of 201 boats which cashed me a check of 400 dollars. Of the 12 fish we landed in the two days, some of them came of darters, some came of drop shot gobies, and some off jerkbaits and crankbaits.
On June 5th, we got 2nd out of 12 boats at the Superbass Lake Michigan Division Team Tournament out of Indiana. We weighed in 16.00 pounds and had the lunker of the tournament again with a 4.38 pound smallmouth. All of our fish for this tournament were caught on a Drop Shot Goby, using various colors and some with rattling eyes.
On June 12th, I fished the Cranberry Bassmasters Castle Rock Open, on Castle Rock Lake in Wisconsin. Out of 41 boats, I finished 5th with 11.22 pounds. My fish were caught on frogs and swim jigs of various colors and kinds. One of the things that I discovered during this tournament is how much I like the swim pork by Poor Boy's on my swim jigs. It did account for two of my keepers.
On June 26th, I went back to Castle Rock Lake for the Castle Rock Bassmasters Open and tried the swim pork on swim jigs and the darter jig that I got. All of my fish came on the swim pork on various swim jigs for this tournament. I ended 6th out of 38 boats and cashed another check.
In total, I have fished in 7 tournaments and cashed a check in 5 of them this year to go along with 2 big bass awards. In every tournament I have fished, a Poor Boy's Bait has accounted for at least one of my keepers, and in some cases it has accounted for all of my keepers.
07/07/2010: Started the season working alot due to cut backs at work but the season is progressing.......had a second and forth finish on potato creek in the last month and the bite was definitley on with the finesse poor boy jig, green pumpin and black and blue colors. Would have came in first but for some reason the 6lber I had next to the boat didnt like the net when he seen it and just took off, jumped out of the water and that was all she wrote. Had a few decent finishes on Lake Michigan but nothing to brag about so far. Weather seems to be a disadvantage and unpredictable for us so far. The kickin darter has been working really well throwing them right next to the rock wall edges working them on a 1/8 jig head. Mango magic always seems to be the best!
06/30/2010: I recently had a 3rd place finish at the Annual Full Moon Open held at Horsetooth Reservoir in Ft Collins, Co. It was a night tournament fished from 7 pm to 7 am. I missed 2nd place by 6/100s, and 1st by 3 ounces. I used 2 chatterbait type baits with a Poorboys swim trailer on one and a Poorboys BBG jr on the other. Both were a green pumpkin color and the Chatterbaits were a green pumpkin with red and red blade.
07/24/2011: Wow, what a summer so far! Fishing has been really up and down. I am finally starting to catch some good bass on jigs, been flipping a Poor Boy's Darter jig into weedbeds. Started out with black and blue but have had to switch to more of the bluegill colors. We had a good tournament at Hardy Pond this year - 13.37 lbs. We were thowing Darters into deep wood cover we found offshore. Great Lakes melon really turns the smallies on. I will send a list of results in the near future, hold on and keep casting.
